It’s the NBA Finals, and I have been glued to the TV watching Lebron James of the Cleveland Caveliers and Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors. A couple of days ago during the opening game I had originally planned on penning a bunch of over-due thank you cards while I was enjoying the match up between Golden State and Cleveland. But, I ended up just “vegging” instead, while soaking up the game. I “just” watched the game and it was so nice.
My kids were not home for some of the game so I could have easily been writing those overdue cards, but I was just tired and wanted to relax during the very exciting game. It’s honestly hard to relax when you are multi-tasking; even doing a non-technical task like writing cards felt like work. And sometimes we just need a break, don’t we?
When I told my husband I felt guilty for not getting anything “done” during the NBA finals game, he said, “Cornelia, do you ever just allow yourself to play?”
So, my parenting thought for today, is also a life thought. It’s simple: Moms, Dads, Allow yourself to relax. You do not always have to be multi-tasking.
When my kids came home from their activity to join me for the game, they plopped on the couch next to me. If I was engaged in a bunch of other activities, who knows if they would have done that. Either way, it’s okay to relax. Allow yourself to play.

I know, right Megan? I do like your idea though, scheduling down time!. . . and that is what I started doing while watching the NBA finals after that first one!

Why is that so hard for us to do? Especially when it is so important. Maybe the answer is to include down time on our calendar, and guard that time jealously. We will be better off for it, and so will our families.
