Steve Jones’ fifth-grade class, which includes Devin, won the contest, which was funded by Pizza Schmizza in West Linn.
The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that works to bring clean water to needy communities around the world.
Devin’s goal is to raise $12,000, enough to build two wells in Africa.
“My teacher recently adopted a baby from Africa. When he got back, he showed us pictures from Africa,” said Devin. “I saw how bad it was, and I really wanted to help.”
His mother, Amber Wedin, said, “He had no idea so many children died because of lack of clean drinking water.”
They found out about The Water Project while researching organizations that build wells in Africa.
